About the Project
Chameleon is a contemporary musical about identity, mental health, and the danger of being seen only as what others want you to be.
Chase, a 16-year-old struggling with depression, returns to school after a stay in a psych ward and lies to his friends about where he’s been- claiming he worked on a movie filming nearby. Sam, a teenage movie star suffocating under fame and the expectations of his director father, just wants a few hours of normalcy. When their paths cross, a bargain is struck: Sam will help Chase maintain the lie if Chase sneaks him off set.
As an awkward but genuine friendship forms, online comments pointing out how much the two boys resemble each other spark a reckless idea- what if they switched lives for a week? What begins as an escape quickly spirals out of control when Sam discovers he likes being “normal” far too much.
Blending humor, heart, and unease, Chameleon explores how easily identity can be taken, performed, or erased- and what it costs to reclaim yourself.
