Rodnesha Green killed it! Every time she was on stage, every song she sang. She was truly excellent. The best singer in the bunch!
Everyone is such a great character actor. No one dropped character throughout and they all feel so distinct.
Loved the smart throughline about how the patriarchy labels women as “crazy” when it’s generally result of trauma imposed by the men in their lives.
What I didn't like
My biggest pet peeve is that a lot of the singing was off key and it was grating at times. It made the show feel more like karaoke night than a theatrical production.
It’s hard with jukebox musicals to make the songs fit. While the songs on their own were fun, at times I struggled with the song choices themselves and how they connected to the narrative, which I felt was very well constructed and slowed down by song choices that felt almost random. I still enjoyed the songs on their own, but I felt like the songs and narrative were disconnected at times.
I felt that the videos on the screens cheapened this production with easy eye rolling gags (like the ASMR hand videos whenever that song said “hands”), when what was going on stage was sufficiently compelling and did not need the visual aids.
That last number medley. What a fun medley, such great song choices and I am sure there was a lot of work done to make all of these fit! But the singing was so out of key that it made it the least enjoyable part of the show for me.
