The story itself, and the cast seem to have great chemistry, beautiful costumes, and use of a small stage to fill it with life and change the environment from scene to scene to fit the dialogue.
What I didn't like
I was not fond of the table read style of this performance, having the actors on stage with script in hand, though it seemed some may have known their lines more than others, which made it even more obvious, & it was a bit distracting & took away from the overall performance for me. Especially since all the shows I’ve been to in Fringe were off book, it felt like a single obvious outlier that made the work feel underdeveloped for showcasing just yet.
My overall impression
It is a very real historical based story of being black and talented with a dream in post slavery America, when freedom is not just about no longer being slaves but free to pursue your wildest hopes & dreams despite adversity & racism being still prevalent & palpable part of society. What would you do to follow your passion? This story explores that and more in a heart warming family friendly piece of work.
