Abbigail Turner is the first African American actress nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 43rd Academy Awards. Even though she’s fairly earned this honor, her fight to be seen as a equal amongst her peers, still hasn’t been won. Upon entering the awards venue, she’s confronted with the infuriating reality that not even her historic nomination can prove she’s more than a “Mammy” in the eyes of industry gatekeepers and a racist society. We leave viewers on the edge of their seats wondering if she goes home with the little gold man as we time hop to Abbigail’s very first performance as a teenager in rural Kansas. This performance and the events that follow are the catalysts that set her off on an ambitious journey of becoming a pioneer of Black Hollywood.
