From beginning to end, Goody was a delight! I’d’ve enjoyed an hour of just the preshow! Elena Martinez is so responsive to the audience and has an answer for EVERYTHING! The character of Goody is extremely endearing and so fun to play with! This show probably also had the best use of the land acknowledgement I’ve seen this year. The faces Elena makes and the poses she strikes make me smile just thinking about them. She had the whole audience roaring at every bit.
I’m from Massachusetts and have been to Salem often—-I wish there were more interpretations of the Witchcraft Trials like this. I find a lot of Salem material to be exploitative and sensationalized, but by turning a witch trial into a clown show, Martinez brings a form of justice to the victims by peeling back the curtain to show us the inherent buffoonery of the Trials. She also honors modern witches through her benign and silly spell work in the earlier parts of the show.
What I didn't like
I just want more, more, more! We were having so much fun we weren’t able to do three full trials. No regrets, but I could watch this show for hours on end.
My overall impression
Wickedness! Witchiness! She turned me into a newt! (In the best way, of course!)
