I will never get the image of Goody singing to herself while drawing a demonic star on the ground out of my head. The preshow and minimal use of words during the pre-show is so simple and effective. The show uses audience interaction seamlessly, always letting the audience bring their own energy and keep things present without ever making anyone feel too on the spot. The costume is really high quality and escalates the world building significantly. The whole experience was shocking, silly, and wildly entertaining.
What I didn't like
I think it would be fun to continue unpacking the absurd reasons why Goody might be so desperate to burn. The subversion is so fun and unexpected that I felt myself wanting to live in that space even more.
My overall impression
Elena Martinez sizzles (literally) as a clownish reinvention of Goody Proctor in this surprising clown extravaganza, delivering wild discoveries and laugh-out-loud immersive bits. The overarching conceit of Goody wanting to be seen as a witch alone is a hilarious premise, but Elena pushes this even further constantly subverting expectations of what scrutiny does to a person. Elena’s performance is giddy, darkly funny, occasionally profound, and always a great time.
