I think the best thing about the play is the writing. It moves from funny to serious in the span of minutes, and at times unpredictably. I was surprised that it reached such a raw and vulnerable place, and genuinely moved. There are some strong performances, and every actor invests in their reality. I like the idea of using a projector – production design wise there are some fun concepts which feel a little under-actualized. Overall, I think it’s a good piece of work. It’s the perfect kind of hour long show for a fringe setting.
What I didn't like
Overall I liked this play. I do think there are specifically issues in terms of direction, which lead to some inconsistencies in the performances. These are: vocal energy (one of the performers was inaudible for much of the show), acting direction (one character speaks a lot of their text to the third space / horizon / above the audience, while the other three exist much more naturalistically and rarely direct their text to this space), pacing (the transitions between scenes are too long, a problem which could have been solved with a more creative solution – having some kind of running gag or guest character fill the space so we aren’t left in the dark during transitions). The set was sort of coming apart by the end of the play and I wish the actors played with this more. There is so much boldness in this writing and a lot of potential in the cast, but it felt a little under-delivered.
My overall impression
I enjoyed this play. It’s a fun, playful and engaging way to explore early relationships / sexuality of a group of college kids. The writing stands out in this piece.
