I appreciated the playful approach to religious trauma. It was a true dramedy, I was laughing through my tears at parts. I also liked the clear moments of the ‘devil and angel’ characters speaking to the protagonist and the actor did a great job of making it clear for the audience that each ruled a side of him along with the stage. I, also, liked how interactive the actor was with the audience.
What I didn't like
I would have enjoyed having a program for the show when I was seated.
My overall impression
Formerly Mormon feels like a twist on the classic cult confessional. Rather than asking for forgiveness from a god or an Elder for his transgressions against the church for being gay and simply being human, Frankie’s testimony ;) is a confession and a moment of forgiveness for his “sins” as a member of LDS against his friends, queer community, and himself. We, the queer folk/ the congregation/ the audience, have a chance to listen, accept, and perhaps to forgive as well.
