What I liked

As mentioned in my summary the main positive is that it’s a thinker. It really pulls the viewer in and leaves them with empathy and curiosity about how we can improve our own communities to avoid atrocities like this in the future.

What I didn't like

I can’t think of a whole lot! I really loved it.

My overall impression

Absolutely beautiful production. I saw it opening night and ever since, have been thinking about its coupling of themes exploring both the Asian American experience with internalized and experienced racism, as well as generational trauma. I also love the portrayal and foil of the black American experience as a reference point.

The standout to me was Miya Kodama who was able to find clear and colorful character portrayals of two distinct characters in two different eras of America. She really helped to paint a picture of both the self defensive inner world as a survivor of the Japanese internment camps as well as a young Asian American girl in the 70s trying to break free of that trauma.

This play is a very important and educational watch, especially for those with more privilege. I hope this gets picked up for other runs or adaptations elsewhere!!
