About the Project
THE LINCOLN DEBATE offers a funny, touching, and honest look at Abraham Lincoln’s relationship with Joshua Speed, his bedmate for four years. Using only real historical sources, including Lincoln’s deeply affectionate letters, the play brings to life a fascinating and often overlooked chapter of his story. By weaving this relationship together with his complicated courtship of Mary Todd, it reveals surprising insights and, through humor and heart, invites audiences to reconsider what they thought they knew and draw their own conclusions.
