I can’t even explain how much I loved the writing and acting here. This show does so much with its time slot but never for a second feels rushed. The world the writer builds is massive and lived-in, and there’s such credit to be given to the writer/director for accomplishing so much in a tight timeline. I’m not even sure I can fully say I was left wanting more, just because it all genuinely came together so well in the end, too. Our three actors here are impeccable, genuinely so in the moment and really encapsulating the body language of those awkward pre-teen stages scarily accurately (like… I swear I had flashbacks myself). The staging and set design are simple but super effective. The twist genuinely leaves the audience shocked, with how the story builds the comedy right before, only to twist in a second into something darker, which shows a really clever balance of horror and comedy. And the addition of the original boyband music really took this play to the next level.
What I didn't like
Literally nothing, this show is perfect as is.
My overall impression
WOW! SLUMBERPARTY is a triumph of girlhood and an incredibly accurate representation of the intensity of being a preteen girl. The tightest 30 minute show that will have you so invested it feels so much longer, without a second of wasted time or space. SLUMBERPARTY is an absolute MUST watch this Fringe, and I’m excited to join the Cute & Confused fan club!!
