Great acting, thoughtful writing, and high energy!
What I didn't like
Truly no suggestions for improvement besides hoping more people get to experience the madness.
My overall impression
Burt Thunders commandeers a studio at his small-town TV station and takes the audience on a wild ride. It’s a laugh riot, even as we begin to see who Burt really is and the guffaws develop an uncomfortable undertone. Eric Schinzer perfectly captures the smarmy charm of a D-list “celebrity” who has dedicated his life to capturing the great white whale of fame and power and is absolutely losing his shit when it begins slipping away. This portrait of narcissism seems particularly relevant in this day and age and is beautifully offset by Taina Estévez’s grounded (literally for much of the show) and hilarious portrayal of the selfless Patricia. The entire cast is fantastic and the whole performance bursts beyond the confines of the black box theater with boundless energy. The bookending video pieces truly set the tone and add to the overall resonance of the play. Afterward, our faces hurt from smiling, but we also couldn’t stop talking about the deeper themes of the work, which speaks to Sam Keeney’s excellent script. “Save the Whales” is a fun, irreverent harpooning of toxic masculinity, and we heartily recommend it!
