The music was the highlight for me. Every number felt purposeful, and the cast brought so much emotion and energy to each performance. Kendre Scott had a magnetic presence whenever he was on stage, and the vocal blend across the ensemble was outstanding. I especially enjoyed the richness and clarity of the soprano voices. The production also flowed well, with each story naturally leading into the next, keeping me engaged from beginning to end.
What I didn't like
From my seat off to the side, there were a few moments where it was difficult to understand the lyrics, particularly during some of the ensemble numbers. Since the storytelling relies so heavily on the songs, a little more vocal clarity or sound balance would have made it easier to catch every word. Other than that, I really enjoyed the production.
My overall impression
My first experience with the Hollywood Fringe Festival, and I went in knowing very little about Elegies or William Finn. I was invited by a friend, and I’m really glad I said yes.
The show was intimate, moving, and beautifully performed. Kendre Scott was a standout—an incredible voice and such a captivating stage presence. The entire cast was talented, and the sopranos were especially impressive. Their harmonies were gorgeous.
What I appreciated most was how the show balanced loss with humor, love, and celebration. It never felt overly sentimental; it felt honest and deeply human.
A wonderful introduction to both William Finn’s work and the Hollywood Fringe Festival.
