The vocals were just arm-hair-standing-straight-up good, and they were matched by the acting. Occasionally in musical theater, you get a performer who’s got powerhouse pipes, but there’s nothing going on behind the eyes, you know? Not a single person in the “Elegies” troupe had that issue; every cast member allowed the emotions from the stories they were telling to play on their faces. It was lovely, moving stuff.
What I didn't like
I mean, personally, there were certain numbers I preferred to others – but that would be the case with any musical or concert or song-cycle, and certainly not the fault of anyone involved with this production. Overall, “Elegies” is very much worth seeing. The talent involved is off the charts.
My overall impression
I came into this show as a person who knew practically nothing about it, couldn’t define the phrase “song cycle,” and is generally meh about musical-esque theater in general — and “Elegies” quickly grabbed my attention and held it through the entirety of its run-time. That’s no small thing. This is a skillfully staged, gorgeously sung, and affectingly performed piece, and it should be seen stat.
