Although death is in the air—subjects of Finn’s tribute are those who have been lost—this is an uplifting show, made all the more powerful by graceful and sensitive staging, including projections, the reformation of chairs to create groups intimate and expansive, and a talented keyboardist, who strikes just the right notes, pun intended.
What I didn't like
This show deserves a larger audience, and ultimately a larger venue.
My overall impression
An absolutely beautiful theater experience. A dozenish extremely talented singers cycle through a collection of very personal songs by William Finn. Personal to him, but through the details of these affectionate portraits—of unnamed and named theater friends, 9/11 victims, pets, his mother, and others, Elegies also sparks deep memories and emotions tied to our own past.
