What I liked

With a cast of only two, there is nowhere to hide. Carter Scott not only stars as Danny but also serves as the production’s director, balancing both roles effectively. Beside Scott, Jo Beth Locklear delivers a powerhouse performance as Roberta. Both actors are exceptional, carrying the heavy psychological weight of their characters with fierce intensity, yet offsetting this with a tender humanity, and occasional comedic relief. Their on-stage chemistry is undeniable, anchoring the story is an oh so beautiful way
I was totally drawn into the story and before I knew it, they play was over.
While the play is deep and intense, I left the theater feeling deeply uplifted, having witnessed the redemptive, life-saving power of human connection.

What I didn't like

I did not care for the lamp on stage. It was too bright.

My overall impression

John Patrick Shanley’s Danny and the Deep Blue Sea is a notorious pressure cooker of a play, demanding immense emotional stamina from its performers. In this exceptional production at the Hollywood Fringe Festival, I was treated to a fabulous display of acting, directing, set design, and radical storytelling that left a profound, inspirational impact.
What makes this particular staging so brilliant is its audacious, modern twist: the character of Danny is re-imagined. Instead of the traditional dynamic, we witness two women—both fiercely protective, isolated, and deeply troubled souls—colliding in a rundown bar. It transforms the narrative from a standard gritty drama into a deeply moving exploration of vulnerability, survival, and the terrifying beauty of unexpected love and forgiveness.

Carter Scott and Jo Beth Locklear have crafted an outstanding, must-see presentation at the Fringe. Highly recommended.
