Don’t Box Me In is a project that analyzes the toxic heteronormativity that seeps in the homosexual community specifically through a black queer woman lens. As queer individuals we have been seen as some if not the most liberated “free” people in the world because we’ve already decided to push away the patriarchal society of what it means to strive to be a part of the “nuclear family”, but not a lot of people talk about the true intersections, privileges, and disadvantages of the LGBTQ community specifically when the most represented in marketing media, business, and the world focuses and highlights mainly on the white Gay male experience.
In this play I want to write about the intersectionality of the black queer woman and how heteronormativity revolves around the homosexual community. I want to take the audience on a journey through vignettes to show the intersectionalities of the queer experiences as I highlight colorism, toxic heteronormity, vulnerability, and the sense of belonging. This is a call to action peace. It’s not a brush it under the rug conversation but it’s often looked down by the queer community because to reveal and process within your own self that you are a part of the heteronormative problem is a lot to sit with.
If we all can give each other grace then maybe, just maybe resolve the issue through love and understanding.
