What I liked

The smart and fast paced writing coupled with Marker’s comedic timing and acting skills.

What I didn't like

I couldn’t hear that well when she was on the phone call she too rear audience as I was on the opposite side of side. She needs to figure out how to project that whisper better.

My overall impression

Hot Yoga — skillfully written and wonderfully performed by Ruby Marker — is, as LA Magazine says, “not to be missed.” Marker uses comedy as a tool to tell a story about growing up in a small town, the performative “community” she encountered, the trauma she endured, and the unorthodox, deeply disturbing way she confronts those hurts when she faces her greatest disappointment yet.

The writing is brilliant, bright, fast-paced and engaging — and all of it delivered while teaching a yoga class. The play moves effortlessly from the stereotypical yoga teacher, all sweet and insincere, into a dark and disturbing send-off for Marie’s last class.

Her timing is impeccable, using laughter to give the audience just enough breathing room before delivering yet another glimpse at the events that have shaped her. Her vocal work — moving fluidly between Marie the yogi and Marie the victim — gave this attendee serious belly laughs and bone-crushing sorrow, sometimes within the same breath.
