I liked the overall tone of the show, as it is humorous and honest. There are themes of sexual assault that the writer and the cast handle in a sensitive way that doesn’t shy away from the harshness of the reality of it, even as it frames it with magical elements. I liked that the cast was unified in their delivery, their performances, and their execution of this show.
What I didn't like
I truly cannot think of how this show can be improved. I suppose one note, if I had to give one, is instead of actually shooting water in the air during one pivotal puppetry scene, they could throw cut-outs of water or stuffed-animal plushes of sea creatures instead. They throw out glow sticks toward the end of the show, for example, and those don’t get anyone wet. Other than that, no notes!
My overall impression
The Fisherman’s Wife deftly delivers on a wild and wonderful script! It’s a tight, well-acted, well-produced, well-orchestrated sex farce that draws the audience in— almost like a set of tentacles—and never lets go. This show is funny, heartfelt, and dark as it explores relationships, trauma, longing, and magical surrealism and it’s one of the most entertaining shows I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing!
