This show is grounded in its characters, who are incredibly realistic. The acting is incredibly natural from all parties, and though the play deals with tense subject matter, the more lighthearted moments are really impactful, adding a great sense of levity particularly at the top of the show that carries through. The show uses interstitial transitions where the audience is drawn to watch Al, the protagonist, in emotional quiet moments, while the staging is changed by the other actors, and I felt that worked really well.
What I didn't like
On occasion, the music / ambient noise felt just a little distracting from what was happening onstage, as it didn’t quite feel like it meshed with what we were being shown, in some of the more serious moments. However, this was only a few times and through most of the show, it was used incredibly well to add to the experience, particularly during the television scene and the heartbeat effects.
My overall impression
URGENTCARE is a fascinating and incredibly engaging piece that highlights the trans experience in a very dimensional way. It’s grounded and heartfelt, well-acted with dialogue that flows really easily.
