The fully actor controlled avatar was great, the costumes (especially the officiant! wow!) and set were impressive. The instructions for the phones were very clear, and I don’t think you could have done better.
What I didn't like
I found I had a bit too much freedom in placing the avatar- it was difficult to get it lined up and sized within the screen so I felt like I was distracted from what was happening on stage more than I should have been.
The heart of the play for me felt like the relationship between the sisters. The voice over flashbacks were great, but the visuals that went with them didn’t make me feel as emotionally connected as I could have been.
The protestors were great, I think this could’ve been heightened more before the confrontation.
My overall impression
Admirably ambitious and impressive production that stretched the limits of the technological limitations of a fringe festival. Although the dystopian themes of the play are depressingly relevant to the present, ROOT’s futuristic style and presentation allowed the audience to engage with the content in a creatively fun and thoughtful way. Excited to see how this piece continues to develop.
