ROOT sucks viewers into existential questions of biohacking, augmentation, and virtual lives, but the human (or posthuman) relationships are driving the ship with force. The storyworld has been well wrought and the storytelling has a masterful intimacy. Layers of class struggle, questions of mortality, and the promise and peril of technology, this play packs so much in 75 minutes. It is anchored by strong performances by a talentef cast.
What I didn't like
While the AR did not work quite so well on my android phone, that also felt like part of the point. The real magic was on stage with the flesh and blood actors. But that may also be the point.
My overall impression
I went for the augmented reality novelty but was gripped by the world building and humanity. A rich storyworld, intricate storytelling, and strong performances make this a must see!
