What I liked

The show had a really stellar aesthetic. From the moment you walk in you are immersed in the world of the play with a level of production value that most shows at Fringe are not able to achieve. The set and costumes really stood out.

I loved when the officiant embodied the protester and was able to perform the character in his own voice. I respect the creative decision for the other characters he embodies to be voice over, but I kind of wish we got to see this performer fully take on these roles, sort of in the vein of a solo show. I think this would have been a great chance for the actor to shine and explore his range!

Many aspects of the show were pre-recorded (Be it audio or video) but I really loved that Pluto’s vocal performance was live! There’s something so fascinating to me about a character existing in the same moment as everyone else but not the same place.

I thought that Dasha Kittredge’s performance stood out – She is a grounding presence in this bizarre world.

What I didn't like

The show established a fascinating world and premise, but at times the characters felt more like vessels for rumination rather than real or complex people. I think it could have been very interesting to add some more nuance to the characters’ opposing perspectives; as it is now, the themes felt rather black and white.

I loved how ambitious the incorporation of the AR was, but unfortunately, from a practical standpoint, it was difficult to stay engaged with the AR character who can only be viewed through the mobile phone. I found myself fed up with the phone and opted to just experience the story without it. Though perhaps this is the point! If so, great! If not, I wonder if there are other ways the AR could have been implemented (perhaps through use of projections?) that would be a little bit easier on the audience.

My overall impression

A unique concept with captivating designs and ambitious integration of technology. This is an experimental piece with a lot of potential that will really shine as the artists continue to refine it.
