What I liked

The play is filled with heart, compassion, and vulnerability, while never shying away from difficult truths. Its themes feel especially relevant today, making it not only an engaging piece of theatre, but an important one.
The cast delivered powerful performances that kept the audience invested throughout, and Tula’s direction was both thoughtful and purposeful. Rather than simply telling a story, he shines a light on the many ways our systems fail the most vulnerable among us.
By the end of the play, it felt impossible not to see ourselves reflected in the pits.

What I didn't like

I did enjoy the moments when the play broke the fourth wall, though I would have liked to see that device introduced earlier. There was also one scene that felt like the play’s resolution, which made the subsequent events somewhat confusing.

My overall impression

Pit of Hope, written and directed by Vince Tula, is a powerful story about our animal shelter system—but its reach extends far beyond that. At its heart, it examines the lives that too often become disposable within broken systems: families torn apart by immigration policies, abandoned animals left without hope, and people carrying the weight of shattered dreams. Yet it is equally a story about resilience, courage, and the determination to persevere against overwhelming odds.
Tula captures the feeling of hopelessness with remarkable honesty, creating moments that are both heartbreaking and deeply human. My favorite scene is pit bull Nueve’s dream, brought to life with extraordinary sensitivity and depth by Ulysses Montoya. It is one of several moments that linger long after the performance ends.
Through its compelling storytelling (actors playing pit bulls) and inventive structure, Pit of Hope keeps audiences engaged from beginning to end while challenging them to confront difficult realities. It is clear that Tula wrote this play with tremendous heart, compassion, and a genuine desire to inspire change.
