The actress who played June really stood out! She had such a clear perspective, disposition and her cadence was fantastic- it really lent to the idea that she came from a different time or place. I also really liked the minimalistic set/lighting designs/ costumes which kind of created a cold and sterile feel to the world.
What I didn't like
There were a few little details that took me out of the world at times, such as one actress’s shiny manicured nails under mud-caked hands (presumably from working all day). Also, something about the baby felt slightly off- maybe it was the way the actor’s handled it or maybe the crying sound effects could have been more muffled? I also wish more of the actors adopted cadences like June did, or even little nuances in their behavior to indicate we’re not in current times. Otherwise I thought this play was very well done and such a thought provoking story!
My overall impression
I’m such a fan of Sarah’s writing! I love how its not packed with exposition and gives you just enough information to let the imagination fill in the rest. A lot of the moments really live in the subtext or what’s not being said. Overall I think this is a very sharp, clever, and well crafted story that feels incredibly relevant and slightly uncomfortable at times. One of my favorite scenes is with the mother and May- so good!
