The writing and pacing were phenomenal. The fact that this was a 90 minute piece and I didn’t look away even for a moment says everything there is to say. It takes real courage to show up for what you believe in and that really comes through. Xander is a talented actor that does not shy away from making dangerous choices which make for a riveting experience. What he does at the end is a beautiful way to bring the audience into the play as well — I was deeply moved.
What I didn't like
The only tiny note would be that while the light design had a very clear purpose, there were moments where it seemed to be a bit inconsistent with what was happening — maybe a little bit of clarity there would elevate the play even more.
My overall impression
Xander really bled for his art and it shows. What a raw, emotional, and powerful performance that can only come from someone speaking their whole truth with all of its contradictions. The characters were so well fleshed out, the humor was perfectly placed, and the writing was incisive. Goosebumps and tears by the end of the show — I had no recourse but to stand and clap. The themes spoke to me deeply and will speak to most folks (especially those of color or immigrants) with complicated parents. I can’t wait to see the heights that Xander takes this to!
