I enjoyed how it really embodied the parent/child dynamic. The father was both a loving and grounding force for Saph, and at the same time, a little delusional as he justified his own mistakes in raising his child.
I liked seeing Saph reconcile his resentment with his undeniable love for his father in his search for a perfect redemption arc before his father dies. It’s not tidy or black-and-white; it’s very human.
What I didn't like
I’d say the ending felt a little forced and over-dramatized. It kind of took me out of the experience just a tad. I felt a little like Alfonso telling Saph to pull himself together. But maybe that was the intention!
My overall impression
This piece really spoke to me as a child of immigrants, dealing with the pressures of achieving the elusive American dream. The actors worked well together, and their performances and the writing make you feel great empathy for both of them despite their being at odds with one another.
