What I liked

I loved the meta narrative of the Fringe performance within a Fringe performance. I liked that it poked fun at the instrumentalities of storytelling themselves and provided a self-aware narrative of the show in real time with physical humor and ham-fisted observations (like yelling “metaphor!” after using two slippers as an extended metaphor).

What I didn't like

Don’t forget the big slipper!

My overall impression

I was absolutely blown away. Edib is an incredibly talented performer, who is able to toggle back seamlessly between moments of hilarity and devastation, depth and silliness. I loved the way they blended the weight of current events and history with the (ostensible) frivolities of standup and modern day drama.

Syrian Soap is an insightful examination of the how our connections to our Ancestors — their hopes and dreams, their trauma, their sacrifices — can be as freeing as they are burdensome, as instructive as they are shame-inducing, as perplexing as they are clarifying. It is a really special piece, and I hope everyone sees it!
