What I liked
The intricately written character studies and committed acting were incredibly moving. Ali embodied vastly different identities, expressions, personalities, physicalities, and experiences, fluidly transitioning between each one. As an LGBTQ viewer, I delighted in watching Ali freely embody both feminine and masculine energy and physicality.
What I didn't like
One aspect of the production that I wanted more context about is the repetition of the phrase “baby eyeballs.” How does this depiction of new insights connect individual perception with watching and enjoying films? Aside from the line explaining that “baby eyeballs” are the only part of the body that does not grow, where does this concept come from, and how did it influence the development of the story?
My overall impression
Astounding solo performance by Anwar Ali. With expressive writing and distinct characterization, Baby Eyeballs explores the depths of empathy and perception. Using metaphors of eyesight and film to depict mortality, the show empowers viewers to “live something you want to see” and take control of their stories.
