The combination of slides/videos and well-timed sound design, along with smart choices of props and wardrobe made for a very engaging show. Her performance alone could carry the whole hour but the variety kept things fun. So much thought and creativity in every choice.
What I didn't like
The space itself was a bit loud (AC?) so that made it a little harder at times to follow. Some characters might still have a chance to be fleshed out a bit more…e.g. wasn’t quite sure how Jay (?) fully fit in or maybe it was too soon after the very cool boxing match that could have had time to settle a bit first. But it in no way took away from the overall story or my absolute engagement the entire time!
My overall impression
The End of The World is a very thoughtful and daring exploration of difficult themes and a brilliant showcase of a truly gifted performer and writer. In a sea of solo shows that are often navel-gazing, Destiny’s piece is truly an artistic deep-dive into topics that are not easy to talk about, let alone make entertaining and darkly comedic. The balance of goofy characters, breathtaking poetry and the important questions she’s posing leave you wanting more. My favorite moments are when it’s just Destiny, in stillness, in a single spotlight, vulnerably pouring her heart out to us. Not with melodrama, manipulation or victimhood but with such honesty and curiosity. I love that she’s taking this show abroad because her questions about our country and society reflect a big portion of us who are not ok with the status quo but are really, really tired. Brava!
