Because it starts with words: Emilie’s writing is clear and and straightforward. Her characters are well-defined and well-acted. Character by character, bit of story by bit, she drew me in…and then gutted me. So as not to spoil it for others, let’s just say I picked the wrong day to wear mascara. And I’d do it again.
Ann Noble’s direction was invisible, leaving no fingerprints—the best kind for pieces like this.
What I didn't like
“Improved” = “what would I change.” And I wouldn’t change a thing.
My overall impression
Emilie told me a story that, in decades of live theatre, I hadn’t heard—and she broke my heart in the doing. What a remarkable piece of writing and what a wonderfully faceted performance. But take tissues.
