What I liked
The use of the therapist as a virtual presence on the cellphone was a unique way to allow the performer to engage with another voice, keeping in mind that there is only one performer on stage. The projections provided videos and visuals to complement the storytelling (which was more utilized toward the end). The inclusion of the original songs and music really enhanced the storytelling.
What I didn't like
Although the performance stage was small for the performer, it would be interesting to explore in what other ways the stage could be used. At times, it felt like the performer was in the exact spot for a while. Another idea can be to create a mini aisle way in the middle of the audience rows for the performer to then use.
My overall impression
Hollywood Chola is an empowering solo show that speaks to the resistance, resilience and perseverance that actors of color often face within the midst of the entertainment industry. It also addresses the self-doubt that an artist can have as they navigate their “why” and ponder on
what it is that that continues to propel their artmaking and purpose. Yelyna De Leon’s stage presence commands the audience’s attention and her versatility across monologue and song showcases her creativity and range. Overall, this show is vital, in a time, when stories and voices of color are often bypassed.
