About the Project

What if you said the thing without saying the thing? Masked behind quick delivery and comedic punchlines, Sativa: Ain’t That A Bitch aims to tell multiple stories from characters from all sorts of backgrounds. Family drama, Organ harvesting, the N-word, and the government are all topics cooking in this pot of mayhem. Performed through the vessel of a pansexual, Black woman, audiences will feel like they’re watching an episode of That’s So Raven meets Cops while floating above the clouds, elevated on sativa. A show so good, it’ll leave you starting your review at dinner with the word: BITCH!!!

There’s Jaqueline, a flower-smoking self-proclaimed spy with ties to Harriet Tubman, Lucas, a twenty-something schizophrenic poet, Lenore, a partying mother of three in the 70’s, Lil girl with a BIG secret, among others. You’ll question whether they’re all existing at different times or if they are all One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest crazy, living in the same mental health facility. Is this Punk’d or a documentary of the last fifty years? But seriously, which of them dies so others can live?

You might ask why these stories, people, places, and most importantly, why now? I aim to start a revolution. I want people to think deeply about the small axe that can cut down the mighty tree, as Bob Marley put it. There are so many things happening in the world and in this country that it’s overwhelming to the point of self-destruction. Oftentimes, we feel powerless in the machine. I wrote this piece because it was something I knew I needed. And if I needed it, I figured somebody else did too. Why is comedy sprinkled in? People are fed enough trauma on social media that they come to the theater to get away from all the noise. Which is why my approach is saying the thing without force-feeding it. My motto for creation is let the people laugh, and surely they’ll also cry, and think of ways to fight back against the system when the time comes!
