Throughout the show, Dara uses what appear to be actual voicemails from her grandmother which, while encouraging, are nothing short of hilarious; and yet their presence amplifies the absence of her mother’s voice with whom she had a more complicated relationship. These recordings help us know that Dara’s going to be okay, Grandma’s got her, while simultaneously underscoring the lack of motherly encouragement.
What I didn't like
At times I would have loved for the pace to be a bit slower, but really it felt like she just had so much to tell it was just a matter of packing it all in.
My overall impression
Dara takes us on her journey of losing her mother and we find ourselves frequently laughing at her honest musings, silly dance breaks, and complete transparency with the audience. She is an excellent storyteller. Simply seeing inside Dara’s thoughts is a ride of clever quips, but the end result is heartfelt and nothing but sincere.
