Stellar performances all around enhance an already strong script full of pathos and humor. The show maintains a very difficult balance between comedy, drama and self-awareness, nodding at and playing with the audience-winking Marvel has become known for without undercutting itself in the way they have also become known for. I am a very big fan of the amount of craftsmanship on display in this production, making impactful use of callbacks, recontextualization, and motifs that made my little writer brain go “OOOH YES.”
This was easily one of the slickest and most well-rehearsed productions of this Fringe and could absolutely go up at the Geffen with minimal changes
What I didn't like
I am humbly requesting a post-credits scene where Kirby, Ditko, and Wally beat up Stan Lee Office Space style
My overall impression
A sharp, tight drama with no fat on the bones about the genesis of Marvel Comics that left me informed, yes, but more importantly, extremely entertained by this conga line of odd dudes who for better and worse helped shape the modern entertainment landscape
