What a treat to see this show in previews with a packed house! THEMENWHODREWTHEUNIVERSE gives us a good hard look at how the sausage is made—in this case, the sausage is comic books. I liked how Stan’s character took on more and more of the persona I’m familiar with throughout the play (including with costuming)! Later “reveals” in the play thus feel even more shocking.
Our group left the show talking excitedly about motives, and winners and losers; going on to relate this work to our own lives and personal and professional challenges.
What I didn't like
The play comes alive in the dialogue exchanges—sparks fly! I’d be interested to see if more of the monologues’ storytelling could be brought into these exchanges.
My overall impression
A powerful examination of the creative process, the joy of the craft, and the pursuit of credit where credit’s due.
