A few more props could have been used to immerse the audience in the setting.
My overall impression
This is a phenomenal show filled with humor, suspense, danger, and raw honesty. And did I mention there are spaceships and aliens?
Strange Beings uses the isolation of the final frontier as a catalyst for critical conversation regarding the fear-filled failings of a once impassioned romance. With the flight path disrupted due to malfunctioning spacecraft equipment and potential alien interference, our intergalactic crew of two engages in a long overdue examination of their intimate relationship – something that feels like light-years behind them. The back-and-forth is filled with poignant truths, jocular repartee, and refreshing vulnerability. It makes a strong case for preserving the beautiful and complicated nature of humanity. It turns out that even super-intelligent aliens can’t quite figure out us curious Homo sapiens.
The theatre seems to be in short supply of sci-fi, and Nicole Knudsen (writer/director) and her captivating cast deliver something we didn’t know we needed: nuance placed on a cosmic scale. I highly recommend this play to anyone who enjoys clever and gripping commentary on human connection. Or anyone who likes hearing the ambient beeps and boops of a spaceship control center. :)
