I enjoyed the physicality many of the cast members brought to their characters. Reimagining an animated film onto the stage requires quite the bit of imagination to pull off some of the more quirky dynamics. In particular, the engagement with the audience for the board meeting scene was a wonderful addition to the interactive nature of it.
The writing also let itself be transformed by the characters portraying it. It didn’t feel stilted or constricted, but rather felt like the writing was asking each actor to introduce a little bit of their own quirkiness to the roles.
What I didn't like
This isn’t really a criticism so to speak. I kind of wish that some of the scenes could have been more musically interwoven. Taking familiar dialogue and having the characters feeling like they have to start singing and the transition from scene to song is a little more seamless. Or maybe even more back and forth, like a line is sung, and than the character speaks another line, and then the next lyrics bursts and we are fully in in the song. In any case, the show itself was great and this is more of a reflection. Story and songs themselves did match and brought a lot of energy.
My overall impression
A fun, light hearted, and engaging ensemble performance. These characters were more than just the caricatures. While the antics were quirky and abundant, the characters were as much real as they were eccentric!
