This was just loads of fun! There was never a dull moment! I loved the way the music and lyrics supported the themes and story. The staging was fantastic. The use of film projections to establish settings and locations was terrific. I enjoyed the balance of hilarity and heartache. I really felt for the main characters, very strong emotional arcs. The cast was uniformly excellent. This was just a wonderful theatre experience.
What I didn't like
I confess, there were a few moments where I got a little confused about midway through the show—it was a big ensemble, many characters and moving parts. But it may have just been my concentration. I won’t say this hampered my enjoyment, but if the show were going to be further developed, some focussed dramaturgy might help clarify a few of the characters and story elements.
My overall impression
Delightful! Wonderful! I loved this show so much! Though I’m not deeply familiar with the original film, I wouldn’t exactly define the show as a “parody”…it felt more like an homage, designed as a comedic and heartfelt musical adaptation. Terrific songs, clever lyrics, fueled by a compelling narrative. Performed by a very talented cast. Bravo and brava to all involved!
