Dylan is a master of sketch comedy. All the characters were distinct in their parody, always adding to the absurdity at hand. It takes a clever hand and a well read mind to come for the throats of William Shakespeare and Anton Chekhov. On the other hand, Dylan handled the dramatic portion of the show with such care and honesty, wrenching the laughter from us and saddling sadness in its place. His earnestness created a deeply personal moment in which the audience felt they knew him deeper than they ever had before.
What I didn't like
Dylan is a young artist and has much room for growth, but this is an amazing start. Front-manning a one-person show that runs about an hour is a tough marathon to do mostly alone. There were many times during the run where his comedy suffered due to poor character transitions which needed to be smoothed out. He would rattle between characters faster than it seemed he could comprehend which ended up being confusing and caused some of the comedy to fall flat. Some of the prop inflated the former issue where characters would be holding the same prop making for moments in which I would be pulled out from the scene. In this case, I’d just recommend to work in collaboration a little more. An outside eye could’ve helped to smooth out the first act and created a more solid experience. In addition, the second act (which was incredibly beautiful and heart-wrenching) came out of nowhere. This may just be my own ignorance, but I’m not certain how the second part relates to the first. Because of this the show ended feeling very disjointed, as if I had watched two entirely separate productions, and if I am to be entirely honest, I wish that Dylan had expanded on the anguish of the second act. Where I could tell Dylan was a master at comedy, the ending made me think he was hiding behind said comedy whilst truly wanting to tell the story he ended with. Keep working hard Dylan, you are an inspiration.
My overall impression
Dylan Magallanes is a firecracker. Constantly bursting with energy and emotion. This is the start of a wonderful career and I cannot wait to see what he makes next.
