I often find solo shows to be at best cringe and at worst self aggrandizing; Wylder defies those trappings. Despite the story being about Wydler’s true life experience, she never forgets her audience. She takes us to church, then redefines what church can be.
What I didn't like
Wylder has such a powerful instrument and the space is so small, it seemed unnecessary to have the microphone.
My overall impression
A haunting and hilarious tour-de-force performance by Gretchen Wylder! As funny as it is vulnerable, Wylder’s true story of being persecuted by Christian extremists in Salem is chilling, but the magic of the show is how she weaves her true account with historical context, playful reenactments, and lesbian witchery.
