I liked how some of the dialogue was very clever. I liked how unique it was. The writers voice came through. I liked the idea and how bold it was. It was also very touching in moments. I thought Eve’s best moment was when she was eating the dragon fruit. She was very present. Also, when she first appeared, she looked at the audience like, " Here I am, this is me. I’m Eve. I dare you." That was very effective. Also, there were moments when I could imagine that they were outside in The Garden of Eden although sometimes it dropped. When it was there, it was strong.
What I didn't like
Some of the blocking could be better physicalized to create more tension between the actors. I think they could have taken each other in more.
I wondered about the character of Adam. He was so dumb and so juvenile while Eve was so smart. I had trouble wondering why she would even go for him unless she had to and if she had to why- I think that could have gone deeper.
My overall impression
In the Beginning reveals a unique and compelling voice in playwright Kylee Q Robinson. Clever, daring, and thought-provoking, the play reimagines the story of Eve from a modern, edgy perspective while remaining grounded in the familiar narrative of Adam and Eve. Through sharp writing and bold choices, Miss Robinson pushes the envelope, asking probing questions about identity, agency, and desire.
