I felt like much of the tension was resolved once Eve found true connection with Adam. The remaining couple scenes felt like a broken up epilogue that I enjoyed, but did not need. However, I understood that if the story ended after her tension with Adam resolved, it would read as a love story instead of Eve’s journey finding purpose and peace with God.
My overall impression
“In the Beginning” expertly dives into all the confusing contradictions and inequities of the genesis story without villainizing religion or God as a character. Adam and God start out as almost antagonistic caricatures of themselves but we slowly grow to understand and appreciate them as complex, flawed individuals. Laurel Preston offers a show-stopping performance as Eve and beautifully portrayed the anger, frustration, confusion, humor, and curiosity that the stellar writing demanded. From the very beginning, the audience empathizes with Eve as she is torn between pleasing God and seeking truth. The minimalist set, props, and costumes made the audience feel as if they were in an eerie, unfinished, liminal space with Eve waiting for the other shoe to drop. Also drag God was so fun, interesting and well executed.
