I loved the framing device of the show. It felt original and fun, and it helped bring levity to the weightier material. It also had great pacing with different “scenes” that kept the momentum flowing, and the communal idea of all being together on this descending ship made it feel like we were not only sharing an intimate moment with Brendan but also those around us. Brendan was stellar and it showcased his abilities beautifully, and the direction/staging/lighting was very effective. But I especially loved the moments that felt a bit looser like the audience interactions and some of the jokes that felt unscripted.
What I didn't like
I loved the pace, but I think there was some room to slow down at the beginning. There were a couple of jokes up I think I didn’t laugh out loud at simply because I didn’t want to miss the next one. Otherwise cut print that’s a wrap baby! It’s so well done and I’m thrilled that it’s going to have a life after this and Edinburgh (and beyond??)
My overall impression
BRENDANSCANNELL: THEABYSS takes you on a hilarious and entertaining ride into the depths of grief and depression. Brendan is a generational talent: an insanely talented comedian who can make anything funny, a gifted performer who has you hanging by his every word, and an observant and thoughtful writer who can make you laugh then cry then laugh again. He has a singular voice and presence and I feel lucky to have gotten to see him in such a personal, intimate performance!
