My overall impression

A beautiful – no, gorgeous – young woman stares pensively out at the ocean from the deck of a luxury yacht. A rumpled yet handsome young man joins her. They engage in oh-so impressive verbal sparring… and we all know where their provocative linguistic foreplay is going to lead. ZK Lowenfels doesn’t take us into new territory with her new play, but we’re quite entertained by her dangerously sharp pen as we glide through familiar waters.
With a sure hand, Aaron Lyons directs Lauren Marie as the Girl, and Mike Rosenbaum as the Boy. Both solid performers, they navigate Ms. Lowenfels’ “talk in twisty riddles” nicely; Rosenbaum, in particular, is able to paint his “sycophantic antics” with some surprisingly subtle shades. Cameron Miller is also charming as, er, the Girl’s alternate route. Yes, at times we get bogged down with the writerliness of it all and lose course during some superfluous set changes, but “Sewer Rats at Sea” is a perfectly enjoyable outing, and an auspicious debut for a young playwright well worth following.
