What I liked

I realized something about myself recently: I enjoy the process of painting much more than the idea of finishing one huge canvas. Last winter I bought a large paint by numbers kit, and although I liked it, I kept putting it aside because it felt like such a big commitment. While looking for alternatives, I found mini paint by numbers and the smaller format immediately appealed to me. Being able to complete one picture and then move on to the next sounds much more rewarding. For those who’ve tried both, do the mini sets still give you that relaxing feeling, or do they feel too simple compared to the larger ones?

What I didn't like

I think hobbies are much easier to stick with when they match your lifestyle instead of demanding that you change it. A lot of people have busy schedules, so projects that can be picked up for twenty minutes and put away without any hassle make a lot of sense. Whether it’s painting, building models, or doing puzzles, smaller versions often encourage people to keep coming back because they don’t feel overwhelmed. Sometimes enjoying the process regularly is better than taking on something ambitious that never gets finished.

My overall impression

I actually enjoy the mini ones more now. Last month I took a set with me on a weekend trip because I knew there would be some downtime in the evenings. A full-size canvas would’ve been impossible to pack, but the smaller paintings fit easily into my bag. I ended up finishing one while sitting on the hotel balcony with a cup of tea, and it was probably the most relaxed I’d felt in weeks. What surprised me most was that the smaller size didn’t make the experience feel “less.” You still get to focus on the colors and forget about everything else for a while, but you also get the satisfaction of finishing a piece much sooner. Since then I’ve recommended the mini sets to two friends who were interested in trying paint by numbers but weren’t ready for a large project.
