What I liked

I loved the intimate setting of the living room set. It really worked given the intimacy of the poetry. The soundscape and visuals really enhanced the piece and didn’t take away from the words once. All the multimedia elements were very cohesive and came together very well to tell this story.

What I didn't like

I would say maybe adding some of the family portraits/pictures to the video could be impactful. I wanted to put a face to the people the performer was talking about.

My overall impression

This was an incredible spoken word piece with poetry that felt honest and sincere. It’s intimate setting of a living room made me feel as though this artist was sharing a piece of herself with the audience, which given the intimate nature of her words, wasn’t far off. I was completely blown away by how captivating her performance was given that it was delivered from the comfort of a sofa chair. It is a testament to how moving each piece was and how the performer’s raw emotion was able to be channeled through her words, making the audience believe they’ve know her their entire life. The soundscape was wonderfully done and enhanced each piece so much so, that it made me wonder which came first, the music or the poetry. This was a masterful multimedia piece that told a beautiful story of family, land, and how we reinvent ourselves throughout our lives, which was made all the more special learning that this was the performers first ever performance. Truly mind blowing!
