The story of Josiah Henson is one I know well, as someone originally from Maryland, reading Harriet Beecher Stowe‘s novel “uncle Tom’s cabin“ was required reading, and whenever I approach the material again a few years ago, the story and the use of the word, Uncle Tom has never sat right with me and I’ve been waiting for someone to clear Josiah Henson‘s name. This show does exactly that, it is so powerful, so raw, and so absolutely heartfelt. I am so glad this show exists.
What I didn't like
I don’t think this was the right space for the show, I also don’t think that it works without some form of a multimedia component, I think there’s a lot that can be added to the show, and it would be even more powerful. I also think that there needs a little more structure and to be flushed out a bit, I would like to see this go beyond a one-man show into perhaps a five person show, it would be absolutely enthralling for a fringe audience.
That being said, even as a rough one man show, I am still in awe of the raw talent and dedication of Jerome to the story.
My overall impression
Absolutely a must see show. What Jerome bring on stage is so raw and real and from the get go you’re thrust into the world of the story. So powerful and a must watch!
