What I liked
The actors connection to each other and commitment to the piece is thick and provides for decadent eye candy; Flores Pizaña and Swezey have cultivated a synergy so engaging I don’t mind a missed step. The love story is sweet and sweeps in and out of incarnations and periods, and hits a timeline that is tragically timely and still manages to be uplifting. It is exactly the show I needed to see right now.
This piece has heart, spectacle, and a 30 minute run time with solid acting. Need I say more?
What I didn't like
The quick changes are not quick, transitions are dreadfully long. They will no doubt tighten up as they continue the run. Some blocking choices feel questionable, notably the Heroine’s entrance when they no longer have to hide and she sets her bag in the last vignette- it’s 2025; we huddle our travel bags together.
Each character gets a clunky soliloquy, and I can’t help but wonder what it would look like if those heightened moments were played to each other; directly facing the audience rang in like a theater forensics competition and these kids clearly have chops.
My overall impression
Captivating from the first moment, Flores Pizaña and Swezey dazzle with a chemistry that is both endearing and intense. An utterly charming, 30-minute crowd pleaser!
