I loved Meades wonderful personality and magnetic attitude. You can tell she knows how to engage with crowd work, and I imagine even the shyest of audience members would be won over by her kind and mischievous demeanor. You can really tell she loves to perform, and she brings smiles simply by being herself. And when she sings? Simply beautiful!
What I didn't like
If I was to suggest anything at all, I think there could have been more variation to the energy. While the show was almost certainly intentionally more akin to a cabaret than a play, there was still a narrative through line that I felt just didn’t reach its full emotional potential when the show was more or less so even tempered.
My overall impression
Run, don’t walk, to see Ms. Tucker, whose story is brought to us by the effortlessly charming Laural Meade. With the help of jingle bells, bawdy jokes, and the talented accompaniment of Fred Cassidy, Meade introduces us to some incredibly talented and thoughtful women – Sophie Tucker, and herself.
